SOLAR ACTIVITY
AR 3695
Overview
This is of Active Region 3695 as it traveled across the Sun’s surface toward the limb (edge). This was captured around 5pm CT on Tuesday (6/4) and is only about 30 mins of capture time compressed into about 7 seconds and looped a handful of time. You can see a large prominence along the limb and a set of large arcing filaments swirling around the active region where you can make out the sunspots. Those filaments are the same thing as a prominence when looked at face-on. The small, spiky, dancing-looking things are called spicules, which are dense gas ejected from the solar surface. I did invert the image a bit to increase contrast. This was initially acquired in B&W and then color-corrected as well.
